“Babies need humans, not screens.”

It is one of the famous quotes from UNICEF that puts a lot of emphasis on human interactions. If you’ve ever wondered if it’s worth fighting with your child over how much time they spend in front of the TV, computer, or other screen, recent research shows that the answer is a resounding “yes.” Families can spend more time together interacting and talking to each other face-to-face if they spend less time with technology. Many parents use screens to keep their young children entertained or distracted while attending to other demands in today’s digital and media-driven society. The idea appears to be smooth as butter.

Children’s attention is captivated by screens in a way that hardly anything else can, giving parents a break. They are glued like honey to the comb. But how do screens affect young brains, and how much screen time should they have? All their activities have shifted to online, from studying to playing to communicating with friends, causing more screen time with a heavy burden on the eyes. With this, very visible effects on them can be seen. According to the American Academy of Paediatrics, children spend more time on electronic media devices than they do on any other activity, averaging 7 hours a day (AAP). Too much screen time has been related to insufficient sleep, poor grades, and an increased risk of obesity.

Another issue with children and too much screen time is that, according to a 2014 report by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, a non-profit research group founded by Sesame Workshop, as children get older and spend more time using screens, there is a measurable drop-off in the number of educational activities they engage in.

Children must learn to concentrate and focus in order to be successful. In their early years, when their brains are more sensitive to their surroundings, this talent begins to develop. Essential cues from the outside environment are required for a brain’s development and growth. They require time to process such inputs, moreover.

We at Little Columbus believe in less or no screen time for children. As it is said that children should sit less and play more, and making this quote our cement base, we have proposed our belief in promoting the real world to children. You cannot always stand on your children’s heads, gandering and controlling what they are watching. On the other hand, when most of the time is spent on screens, the children have very little or no time for outdoor activities, which helps them improve their different skills. Setting aside extra time for family connection and providing activities that encourage creativity and sociability will help to establish screen time limits and enhance a child’s healthy growth.

His idea proposes that imaginary play is critical to children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development, and that it should be the primary focus of children’s assistance. To be effective, this play should provide an imaginative setting in which children can take on and act out parts while adhering to precise rules dictated by those roles. Imaginative play allows youngsters to consider and work through thoughts and concepts that they cannot see. Children’s ability to develop internal language and think for themselves is aided by their social environment. We have instilled different skills in our curriculum needed for the 21st century, which can only be attained through real-world exploration. One of the mantras of our school is “connecting to the real world, not the wifi”, and we strongly adhere to—building individuals who know more about people, not the internet.
